High School Playbook

The Girls' Louisville Invitational Tournament was postponed by a day because of Saturday morning's snow.

Sunday afternoon, the semifinals were played.

Manual took the first semifinal over Franklin County 57-43 after building as much as a 27 point lead in the fourth quarter.

April Wilson had 15 points and four rebounds for the Crimsons.

Mercy defeated Christian Academy 69-47 in the second semifinal.

Julliann Miller led the way with 13 points.

With both Manual and Mercy advancing, the championship game was a 7th Region showdown.

Manual was down three late in the game and had several chances to tie the game, but couldn't get the ball to fall.

Mercy was able to hang on for the 57-56 win over Manual and the 2010 LIT title.

The Girls' LIT was postponed on Saturday due to snowy conditions.

The semifinal and final games will be played on Sunday afternoon.

Manual will play Franklin County in a semifinal game at 1 p.m.

Christian Academy will play Mercy in a semifinal game at 2:30 p.m.

The championship game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Longtime Male High School head football coach Bob Redman left his position Thursday.

Redman, 61, announced his resignation to his team Thursday after 17 years as the Bulldogs head football coach.

In his time with the team, Redman led Male to three state football titles, putting Male on the map as a rare public school able to compete with the Catholic high school football teams.

Redman, who's been coaching high school football for four decades, also coached at Durrett, Waggener and Ballard before coming to Male.

Redman's son, Chris, a record-setting product of Male and the University of Louisville currently plays in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons.

The snowy, cold weather forced most area schools to cancel classes on Friday.

That led the cancellation and postponement of many area high school sporting events.

Jefferson County public and private schools will not hold basketball games on Friday night.

Greater Clark and Floyd County school systems have also postponed Friday night sporting events.

When schools are closed, sports games and matches are automatically cancelled.

January is the primetime for boys and girls basketball. So where does that leave athletes and fans this weekend?

Friday night at 11:15 p.m., WLKY returns from the traditional holiday hiatus for the hoops edition of High School Playbook.

With games wiped out by snowy, cold weather, most are still scrambling to reschedule, especially the all-important Kentucky district games.

Things are more complicated for some who already have games on their schedules for Saturday.

The biggest game of the night was going to be the Indiana boys basketball showdown between archrivals Jeffersonville and New Albany.

The Bulldogs beat the Red Devils last year and have a six game winning streak against Jeff.

New Albany has won nine of the last 11 games in a rivalry started in 1909.

Last year, the Dogs visited the Red Devils and won by three in overtime.

This year, New Albany is the host and has a 26 game winning streak on their home court.

New Albany has a game scheduled with Evansville-Reitz on Saturday, so Saturday is not an option.

Both schools are still working on a later date for the annual game.

At least one high profile Kentucky boys basketball game has already been reschedule for Saturday. Seneca visits Ballard at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Redhawks and Bruins are two of the best teams in the state so far, both with 12-2 records.

Nearly 40,000 people packed into Papa John's Cardinal Stadium Saturday for one of the biggest high school football rivalries in the country.

St. X. and Trinity faced off Saturday for the 68th time.

The Tigers had a three game lead going into the game.

St. X. beat Trinity 32-7. The Rocks fells to 2-4 on the season and the Tigers improved to 5-1.

It was the fifth time in the last six regular season meetings that St. X. handed Trinity a loss.

St. X. scored on a couple of long offensive plays and sealed it with a 100 yard interception return.

Trinity's offense was able to get 390 yards, but the Tigers' defense kept the Rocks out of the endzone.
