They're off to one of the best starts in the program's history, but the name might surprise you.

The School of the Week is... Spencer County!

Spencer County has been one of the fastest growing areas in Kentucky.

Spencer County High School just finished a construction phase that added classrooms, a lunch room, media library and office space. It was an $11.5 million project.
 
Like the school, the Bears basketball program is building something special. During the 2005- 2006 season, Spencer County was 14-13, its first winning season in 12 years.

Last season, the Bears suffered a 6-22 season, but have already doubled their wins this year with a 13-2 start.

Spencer County is coached by a 1999 alumnus, Jacob Barmore, who went right to work at his alma mater out of college. He was the youngest coach in the state, at the time, and happy to be seeing the players succeed.

It's a rematch of one of the most storied high school football rivalries in the country. St. X. and Trinity face off in the Kentucky Class 6A state title game Saturday night.

The two powerhouses met once in the regular season in a game dominated by the Tigers. St. X. beat Trinity 32-7 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on Oct. 3.

The Tigers are 13-1 in 2009. The Rocks are 10-4, after losing four of their first six games.

Last season the teams split their pair of meetings, with Trinity ending up as the state champions.

The Rocks have won seven of the last eight big school football titles, including the last four.

The Tigers have 11 state football championships under their belts. Their only loss this season came against Cincinnati's St. Xavier in September.

I love going to Fern Creek to watch football. Mostly because of their fanbase. A great group of kids, especially basketball player Antoine "6'9" Moore and his Bucwild crew.

But 6'9 was absent Friday night when I arrived at Fern Creek and the game was even more uneventful as Fern Creek uncharacteristically committed seven turnovers.

Luckily a couple cheerleaders brought some excitement to the game tonight.

With a dead crowd, finding excited fans to talk to was going to be extremely difficult. I originally thought of interviewing a cheerleader about having to cheer in a downpour, but then I caught these two young cheerleaders doing a dance routine together accompanied by a rap.

I couldn't help but catch some of it... the rest is history. Enjoy!
