Friday night at on High School Playbook, two southern Indiana schools play for regional championships.

One is Paoli… the other is our Morehead State University School of the Week…

Floyd Central!

It was a history making moment for Floyd Central football when they beat Castle last Friday and earned the program's first sectional championship since 1998.

The win gave the team a 9-3 record in just the third year under head coach Brian Glesing.

A win would be the school's first-ever regional championship.

Most importantly, it would fficially put Highlanders' football back on the map after a number of down years.

The secret to their success has been a productive offense, led by quarterback Max Guenther.

They've also got an opportunistic defense and a dramatically improved strength program which has added stamina and a power game to the Floyd Central resume.

While they're proud of the dramatic improvement, the Highlanders see this as a journey, not a destination.

There are much bigger goals on the horizon, regardless of how 2009 ends.

This team wants to be the building blocks for a program that makes the southern Indiana school a regular in the conversation for state championships.

Floyd Central's regional championship game is Friday night at 7 p.m. at Center Grove, south of Indianapolis.

The Indiana Sectionals Champions are crowned and Week 1 of the Kentucky Playoffs begin!

I was so impressed at the show of spirit by the Manual freshman football team. But maybe I haven't been looking at the Louisville schools close enough. Seems that freshman spirit may be a popular trend here in the 'Ville.

St. X had a cheerblock that ANY school would be proud of. Stacked to the top in a capacity crowd for the "Battle of St. X's."

But while St. X of Louisville was driving towards a game-tying touchdown, I noticed a young group of about 20-30 kids going EXTREMELY crazy! Turns out that St. X's group of niners knows how to get down at a football game. Led by the guys in this interview, they threw themselves right at the camera and were eager for an interview.

You gotta love spirit in ANY shape/form, be it a student, cheerleader, alumni, but it's always good to see a group of youngbloods eager to cut their teeth. Not only are they spirited, but are also proving they can do work on the football field as the freshman team is 2-0 as of this writing.

Keep up the good work boys, and good luck the rest of the season!

The New Albany Bulldogs and other area high schools kick off a new football season Friday night.

Believe it or not, ready or not... Tonight is opening night for the new Kentucky and Indiana prep football seasons.

Tonight at 11:15, we'll have the debut of the 2009 edition of High School Playbook on air.

Every night at 5 p.m. for the last couple weeks, WLKY's Fred Cowgill has taken you to a different school to preview football programs on both sides of the river.

He wrapped things up in Indiana with the New Albany Bulldogs.

They are still looking for their first state championship and come off a 6-4 record last year.

Tonight's 2009 season opener is hosting rival Providence.

Their toughest game comes on Oct. 2 hosting archrival Jeffersonville.

The Iroquois Lady Raiders are state champs!

The Lady Raiders beat Elizabethtown in overtime Saturday for the title.

Asia Mathies led Iroquois with 15 points and five rebounds.

Meka Birdsong added 12 points for the Lady Raiders and Adia Mathies and Kayla Hickman each had 10.

For the Lady Panthers, Alex Jones led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Final score: Iroquois 55- Elizabethtown 47

The Lady Raiders finished the season 33-1.

The Lady Panther finished 33-3.

It was the boys' turn to play at Knights Hall this week. This time, for a chance to play at Rupp Arena in Lexington for the state title next week.

Monday night was a quadruple header Central vs. Fairdale, Shawnee vs. PRP, Eastern vs. Trinity and J'town vs. Ballard.

Tuesday night's game had the field whittled down to four and a trip to the Sweet 16 was on the line.

First up were Shawnee and Central, the 6th Region's final teams.

Central made the field of 16 last year and won their class football championship in December.

The Yellowjackets basketball teamed showed they want a chance for a state title. Alex Morrison had 19 points and football star Ridge Wilson had 27 points and 18 rebounds.

Central defeated Shawnee 84-60.

Central faces Graves County in the first-round of the Sweet 16 on March 18 at 6:30 p.m.

The 7th Region title game came down to a battle between two familiar foes, Eastern and Jeffersontown.

Eastern's only two losses this season were to J'town and the Eagles were out for redemption.

Delquan Thomas had 15 points and 8 assists for the the Eagles. Remy Abell had 23 and Jordan Reeves added 17.

For the first time this season, the Eagles beat the Chargers. The 66-54 win punches Eastern's ticket to Rupp Arena.

Eastern faces Corbin in the first-round of the Sweet 16 on March 18 at 8 p.m.

The Braves lost star Alex Ooley after last senior to graduation, but they still had a team full of great players to carry them in the postseason.  They proved that as they picked up the easy 76-44 win over Rock Creek.
